Punjab Cracks Down on Over-Speeding: Over 95,000 Drivers Fined in 2025

The Punjab Traffic Police has intensified its campaign against over-speeding, issuing fines to more than 95,000 drivers across the province so far this year. The large-scale enforcement drive, backed by advanced technology and strict monitoring, comes as part of the department’s broader push to reduce road accidents and promote safer driving habits.

Record Surge in Enforcement Against Speeding

According to the Traffic Police spokesperson, enforcement against over-speeding motorists is being carried out without discrimination, targeting all categories of vehicles — from motorcycles and private cars to commercial transport.

This year’s statistics reveal a 97% increase in enforcement actions compared to the same period last year. Officials attribute the spike to both stricter rules and an enhanced use of technology, including speed guns and Safe City surveillance cameras, to detect violations in real time.

The crackdown is part of an ongoing safety initiative aimed at deterring reckless driving. Authorities have stressed that the primary focus is not on issuing fines but on saving lives by enforcing speed limits consistently.

Technology Playing a Key Role

The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has been instrumental in supporting the campaign through its extensive network of road monitoring systems. High-definition cameras positioned at key intersections and highways continuously record vehicle movements, enabling police to spot and document violations instantly.

Speed detection guns are also deployed in high-risk areas where over-speeding is most likely to occur, such as highways, ring roads, and urban entry points. This dual-layered monitoring system has significantly reduced the chances of offenders escaping detection.

“Over-Speeding Endangers Everyone” — DIG Traffic

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir underscored the life-threatening consequences of reckless driving, stating that over-speeding is one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents.

“Over-speeding not only puts the life of the driver at risk but also endangers passengers, pedestrians, and other road users,” Nazir said. “The use of speed detection cameras has been crucial in reducing accident rates.”

Nazir emphasized that while issuing challan tickets is necessary for law enforcement, the ultimate goal is to encourage responsible driving and build a culture of road safety.

Public Safety as the Top Priority

In addition to catching violators, the Traffic Police has launched public awareness campaigns urging motorists to obey traffic rules and speed limits. Educational programs, road safety seminars, and targeted media messages are being used to inform citizens about the dangers of high-speed driving.

The DIG confirmed that the department’s “top priority is to make travel easier and safer for the public”, adding that stricter enforcement measures would remain in place throughout the year.

Traffic authorities are also collaborating with transport companies to ensure that commercial drivers undergo proper training and adhere to regulated speed limits, particularly on intercity routes where speeding incidents are most common.

Moving Towards Safer Roads

The Punjab Traffic Police’s aggressive stance on over-speeding reflects a broader road safety strategy aligned with global best practices. By combining strict enforcement, advanced technology, and public education, the province aims to not only curb reckless driving but also reduce the overall number of road accidents.

As the campaign continues, officials warn that there will be no leniency for habitual offenders. Repeat violators risk facing heavier fines, license suspensions, or even legal action, depending on the severity of their infractions.

With more than 95,000 fines issued in 2025 already, the message is clear: in Punjab, speeding comes with serious consequences. Authorities hope that these measures will serve as a deterrent and foster a safer driving culture for everyone on the road.
