PTI to launch lawyers’ movement against likely 27th Amendment: Asad Qaiser

Pakistan’s opposition alliance has declared war on the government’s constitutional agenda, with PTI leader Asad Qaiser announcing a nationwide lawyers’ movement against the controversial 27th Amendment during a fiery Islamabad press conference flanked by top allies.

Opposition Unites Against “Unconstitutional” Amendments
Qaiser—joined by TTAP alliance head Mahmood Khan Achakzai and former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair—called the proposed 27th Amendment a “major threat to democratic norms,” vowing to challenge it across all legal forums. This follows PTI’s earlier walkout during the 26th Amendment vote last October. “The current system is neither legal, constitutional, nor democratic,” Qaiser charged, revealing a month-long action plan to mobilize resistance.

Parliament Under Fire
The former National Assembly speaker unleashed scathing criticism of the government’s treatment of lawmakers:

  • PTI legislators barred from inspecting Adiala Jail despite parliamentary privileges

  • Accusations the National Assembly has become a “controlled drama”

  • Claims decisions made under “administrative pressure,” not legal merit
“Why are MPs humiliated outside jails when global standards allow prison visits?” Qaiser demanded.

“Foundations Shaking” Warning
Achakzai delivered the conference’s most dire warning: “Tampering with the Constitution will shake Pakistan’s very foundations.” His words amplified the alliance’s stance that amendments threaten national stability. Meanwhile, Zubair dismissed government narratives: “Pakistan was never near default despite official claims,” he stated, adding that the ruling PDM coalition had “sacrificed politics without saving the state.”

The Battle Lines
The opposition’s strategy now centers on:

  1. Rallying legal experts against both 26th & 27th Amendments

  2. Publicizing alleged rights violations of jailed PTI founder Imran Khan

  3. Exposing what they call “theater governance” through scheduled protests

With Achakzai’s TTAP alliance strengthening PTI’s reach and Qaiser pledging “every forum against injustice,” Pakistan’s political trenches grow deeper by the day.
