Renowned American singer and songwriter Billy Joel has disclosed that he is battling normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition caused by a build-up of spinal fluid that can impact vision, hearing, and balance.
The 75-year-old music legend revealed the diagnosis during an appearance on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, explaining that while the condition sounds serious, his current symptoms are manageable.
“I feel fine,” Joel said, “but my balance sucks. It’s like being on a boat.”
Joel Suggests Heavy Drinking May Have Contributed
Joel, who has been sober for years, reflected on his past lifestyle and suggested that frequent alcohol consumption could have played a role in developing the condition.
“I thought it must be from drinking,” he admitted. “I used to drink like a fish.”
Health Scare and Tour Cancellation
The Uptown Girl singer’s health concerns came to light after a stage fall during a concert in February. Following medical evaluations, he was advised to undergo targeted physical therapy and postpone scheduled performances.
In a statement, his management confirmed:
“Billy Joel is currently undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period.”
Singer Remains Positive
Speaking to People magazine last month, Joel described NPH as a little-known condition and assured fans he is committed to recovery.
“I know a lot of people are worried about me and my health, but I’m okay,” he said.
Fans continue to send well-wishes as the artist focuses on treatment, with hopes that he will return to the stage in the near future.
